would it be possible to implement the option of selecting different levels of risk also during practice laps in the race weekend, instead of having it fixed to "keep tha car on the track"? this wouldnt replace an actual testing session when there's the need for it, yet it could possibly give some hints as to how sensible is for your driver to push the gas in the following qualifying sessions.. i mean, figuring out whether there's more to gain or more to lose from it
it's always good to hear good ideias...i agree with that, the outcome of the practise laps would be more complete! and i agree too, that it doesn't "hurt" at all the meaning of testing...
I doubt it would be implemented.
it wont add nothing... in fact, will make it harder...
I think a better feature than this would be driver feedback during qualification, and I believe we were told it was being worked on. So any news on how that's coming along?

Quote ( Marcelo Michelini @ March 14th 2007,20:18:34 ) it wont add nothing... in fact, will make it harder... why? let's assume i drive a couple of laps and my driver tells me he's satisfied with the setup: after that i could have him drive another two with the same setup but higher risks, and if the outcome is the same (like he takes off one second on both laps, or instead in both he loses three due to mistakes) i would have some indications whether that risk is worth having in the qualifying lap as well. i don't see how this would make anything harder. of course one wouldnt have to do it, it would remain just an option!
i believe the only feedback from driver during the qual were concerning the mistakes he did, but better than nothing i agree.
noup, because the driver mistake time will be depending on another variable, and so the lap time, it will be more complex to find the fastest setup... as it is something "random", u cant have control over it! and for that will add nothing
i think we don't need this new idea, despite that i am unlucky choosing risks :D

i disagree with marcelo... you know you can find the appropriate setup very fastly, so the laps which you havent used you can use to find all the information about pros and cons of one or another risk you need. So what to do: improve setup or search for the info its just up to you :)

Quote ( Irmantas Butkauskas @ March 15th 2007,17:12:11 ) you can find the appropriate setup very fastly, so the laps which you havent used you can use to find all the information about pros and cons of one or another risk you need that was exactly my point! once you are done with the setup you can concentrate on trying to figure out how much different risks could affect your lap time, and finally move on to the first qualify session
You're right that you can find a satisfying setup in as little as three to four laps. However, you're missing one extremely important point here. Try tweaking your satisfying setup a bit and observe, how your time changes. When you find out, what is happening and how to control it, I'm sure you'll be spending the remaining practice laps tweaking your setup to gain extra seconds of speed instead of finding out, what risks to use. By the way, you can make quite a good guess what risk you should use by your practice already by using some common sense!

we are tweaking ;) | ||||||||||
then its not enough :) | ||||||||||

If people are finding a "satisfied" car setup within 2 practise laps then they must be being given the setup in advance by a team member or someone, as it usually takes me a good 4 attempts before I'm anywhere close!?!

The setup is different for different drivers/cars anyway. Also, there's a big difference between a setup your driver is "satisfied" with and the setup that is both "satisfactory" and fast. I think that's what Petras and Nigel have been trying to vaguely hint at :) |
