We are pleased to offer a dedicated morning for visitors who would benefit from a sensory-friendly experience. You’ll be invited to enter the Museum an hour before opening to enjoy our 3rd floor galleries with a limited number of visitors. We’ll reduce ambient noise during this time, creating a calm space, and also provide sensory maps and a social narrative to help guide you. Our staff will be there to answer questions and to lead special drop-in activities.April 189amFreePre-registration requiredhttps://lnkd.in/e4bBtF-9

This may seem like a tame little pair of safety scissors, butto a museum person it gives us pause and we must look closer!!This week I toured Artis—Naples with the knowledge filled Jessica Wozniak. She gave me amazing insights as to how the museum is committed to providing interactive experiences in their gallery spaces. I smile big each and every time I see Art Museums adding interactives to further the interpretation and engage families in the most appropriate learning mode for kiddos. BUT... back to the safety scissors... as a museum folk, you know that I had to look closer at those scissors. How could they possibly put these lethally destructive tools so close to art pieces worth millions? Tethers of course... and then it's the inspection of the tethering device. How do they keep it safe? How do they keep it sturdy? Are their staff around to supervise this tethered activity? How long is the tether to not obscure the work to be done? What materials are they using to make this kid friendly? OH yes... all these questions quickly run through our heads. SO... if that's what you thought when you saw this picture...YOU ARE A MUSEUM PERSON!#interactivedisplays #playbasedlearning #safetyfirst #inspiredimpact #artmuseum

"BE A CURATOR"You don't make a great museum by putting all the art in the world into a single room. That's a warehouse. What makes a museum great is the stuff that's not on the walls. Someone says no. A curator is involved, making conscious decisions about what should stay and what should go. There's an editing process. There's a lot more stuff off the walls than on the walls. The best is a sub-sub-subset of all the possibilities.Be a curator. Stick to what's truly essential. Pare things down until you're left with only the most important stuff. Then do it again. You can always add stuff back in later if you need to.#mondaymotivation #startedmyweek #productiveweek #onthewayto #be-#a-#curator

💭 When planning projects at your museum or gallery, focus on inclusivity by asking these questions:1. Why have you chosen this resource/planned this project? 2. Whose perspective is it from? 3. Whose perspective is missing? 4. Why is it missing? 5. Who does it impact on? Answering these questions can help you to identify who should be included in the development of your work. Thanks to Nuzhat Uthmani for developing these questions! Discover more advice and information on inclusion by reading our ‘Focus On’ blog: https://lnkd.in/eCQPwnPg

Tip #2: Don’t shy away from hard conversations. Quatrefoil Associate and Senior Designer Auburn Leigh offers suggestions for successful projects in our latest blog article. "By questioning past assumptions and delving into difficult topics, museums can foster deeper engagement and understanding. The trick here is bringing in community members and multiple perspectives to ensure that you’re seeing all facets of an issue and addressing them equally." NYC World Trade Center VisitDepending on your age, you probably have memories of where you were and what you were doing on the morning of 9/11/2001.However, those memories, as is only natural, have probably faded, unless maybe you were actually there that day. I had an opportunity to visit the 9/11 museum last weekend in NYC.And my memoires had in fact faded. The museum resurrected those memories and all that that event entailed: how individuals responded – whether first responders, people in the buildings, the passengers and crew who made sure flight 93 did not reach its target – the physical destruction and deaths, and so much more.It was so powerful. It is a remarkable remembrance of a terrible time and loss, and a testament to what can be the best (and worst) aspects of humankind. And sadly, the world continues to suffer from some of the worst nature of humankind. However, I strongly encourage everyone who has the opportunity to visit the 9/11 museum, but have not yet done so, to make the visit.Whether you have memories of that day or not.It is well worth it. https://lnkd.in/ef6qWmGAhttps://lnkd.in/ehYQx_yr(Scroll down for video - a short video w images and voices of the day)https://lnkd.in/euw2fJzN(History Channel reviews the days chronology and events)

📖 2023 Virtual Special Issue Featured Article:This article originally appeared in the Journal of Museum Education in 2009 and is part of the 2023 Virtual Special Issue - Acknowledging Burnout and the Need for Empathy and Self-Care in Museum EducationThe Museum Educator CrisisBy Tina R. NolanOriginally published in 2009The picture is clear: museums have taken a hit in the current economic recession, and there does not seem to be an end in sight. A recent Museum Research Associates survey shows that museum educators comprise the largest segment of museum staff to lose their jobs in this current financial crisis. How did museum educators find themselves in this position? Do museum leaders think educators are dispensable? I would argue that a growing identity crisis among museum educators lies at the heart of their current vulnerability and that their identity crisis was partly brought about by releasing one of the landmark documents in recent museum history. ..Read the full article here:https://lnkd.in/d5NidtGk#museumeducationroundtable #burnout #museumeducation #museumeducators

#educators, especially #museumeducation professionals, I came across these two books in the New-York Historical Society's gift shop last weekend. Both books help early childhood/elementary school aged children understand #museums better."Making a Great Exhibition" (https://lnkd.in/esdHqXM5) goes behind the scenes of an #exhibition and celebrates all of the museum staff who work hard to put exhibitions together. Students can learn about possible careers they might not have known about. They will also appreciate how much work and how many people are involved."I Heart Museums" (https://lnkd.in/ehmezQcF) is an activity book that highlights over 30 museums across the U.S.A. Each spread introduces one item from one of the museums' collections. There is short text written about each museum and its item followed by a child-friendly activity related to the item. As educators we know that prior knowledge is key to student learning. These books can be used to create prior knowledge and get students excited about museums.
